Commodore version is still a bit janky but much closer to quality of life parity with the DOS version.1. It's odd.Īnyway, this helps me figure out which version to use. Or in the combat sometimes I move one character and then the next character moves in the same direction on their turn.

I do it again and then it will say there is a secret door. Like it will show Search-South and there is a secret door and it will say there is nothing. If I'm searching or talking I may need to do it multiple times to get it to work. I don't know if it's an issue with vice, the game, or the remaster. The only weird thing about it is that when I'm searching or talking (or moving in combat) sometimes weird things happen. And now I can navigate with the arrow keys. Now you mostly notice it when looking at a sign or talking to someone.Īs for the input thing I was able to fix that by following the stuff here: īasically, I told vice that if I press up it should be etc. With the remastered version load times are still there but greatly diminished. I seem to recall having this issue when I was a kid as well (meaning, on real hardware). When I use the arrow keys it just keeps saying "What?" unless I'm using a command like look or search, then the arrow keys work as expected. Is there anything I can do to make the input more reliable? As far as I can tell Ultima V requires you to use the joystick (instead of arrow keys) for controlling movement and menus. I think that would help a lot with load times and remove the need for disk switching. Anyone know if that exists? I couldn't find anything like that. I looked to see if anyone had patched the game so that it can be run from a cartridge. I think the game might depend on some low-level details of the disk drive. It tends to shoot past the character I wanted to target. Using the up/down to select a party member (like the target of a healing spell) is really hard. It seems like an issue with input polling? So then I hold it just a bit longer and then I might get 1 or 2 inputs out of it. Moving on the overworld: Sometimes I tap the arrow key and nothing happens. I have the arrow keys on my keyboard bound to joystick N/E/W/S. I recall this being an issue on the c64 I had as a kid but I just thought it was a hardware problem with the joystick that I owned. I tried making a flip list but there are 8 disk images so it didn't work well. Actually the disk swapping is a bigger deal to me than the actual load times. I really want to love the commodore port but here are some negatives I'm noticing: With Ultima V I've looked at the DOS port (with the music patch), the Atari ST port, and playing the C64 version (on a emulated c128 so that I get music, using vice).

There is a part of me that wants to beat the C64 version since it vexed me so as a child, but one thing I've learned from looking at the different ports of Ultima IV is that they vary greatly in terms of quality of life and general playability. I had access to Ultima V as a kid on the C64 but 10 year old me just wasn't mature enough for that game so I never made it very far. I've been playing 4 on the sega master system as that port is particularly nice in my opinion. When I'm done I want to move on to Ultima V. I'm currently playing Ultima IV for the first time.
